Are you the primary caregiver for someone in your family? If so, most of your time is spent looking after this person (or people) and ensuring they have the best life possible. You do it because you love the person and want to help in any way you can, but caring often turns into a full-time job.

As a result, you have no time for yourself. You spend all your days caring for others, meaning you end every day stressed and ready to pass out. Paying for full-time care services is out of the question as they’re costly – yet you need to find a better balance. After all, if you work yourself to the bone and burn out, who will care for this person while you recover?

All caregivers must recognize that their health is important too. You need to look after yourself, which is where the idea of respite care comes in. It is hugely beneficial for caregivers, but it also benefits those in need of care.

What is respite care?

Respite care is a blanket term covering a wide range of care services. It can include disability care, dementia care, aged care or anything else. The purpose of respite care is to provide caregivers with a brief time away from caring.

Keep in mind that respite care is not the same as paying for full-time care services. It’s something you call upon now and then to get a little break. You will remain the primary caregiver, only you’ve got more time in your schedule to take care of yourself and other aspects of your life!

How does respite care work?

There are no set rules for how to go ahead with respite care. It depends on the carer and what you think is best for the individual receiving care. Some common ways it pans out are as follows:

  • Daily Respite Care – In extreme circumstances when you’re struggling to juggle all of life’s responsibilities while caring for someone, you could get daily respite care. Here, a carer will take over for a few hours every day, so you’re free to do other things. It can give you time to pick the kids up from school or take care of the shopping.
  • Weekly Respite Care – Every week, you get a day or two to yourself while your loved one is looked after by someone else. They could spend a day in a care facility or have another carer take over. Either way, it gives you at least one day to yourself each week.
  • Monthly Respite Care – If your daily or weekly workload isn’t too much to handle, you may benefit from monthly respite care instead. Each month, you may get a few days off to focus on other things in life. Your loved one is being cared for so you don’t have to worry about them.
  • Extended Respite Care – In some scenarios, you need an extended leave from being a caregiver. Take a week or two weeks off to go on holiday or recharge your batteries. This type of respite care is usually reserved for carers on the verge of burning out.

You’re free to use respite care however you like, depending on what works best for you and your loved ones. Budgets will also come into play, so pick an option that’s affordable, yet still offers enough of a break.

What are the benefits of respite care?

The underlying benefit of respite care is that it helps caregivers take a break. You avoid burning out and have time to take care of yourself for once in your life!

  • Spend more time with your kids instead of being a carer 24/7.
  • Improve relationships with everyone around you because you have more time for them.
  • Strengthen your relationship with the person you’re caring for by avoiding any resentment.
  • Ensure your loved one keeps getting around-the-clock care from experienced carers when necessary.
  • Get more time to relax and look after your mental health.
  • Improve the standard of care for your loved one as you’ve got more energy and aren’t always burning out.

In all honesty, you’ll see plenty more benefits from indulging in respite care. It’s something all carers need to look into if they want a healthy life. Look at the options available to you and you’ll finally achieve the balance you’ve been searching for.
