There are many ways to take care of your mental health and many practices that provide mental health benefits. One of these practices is participating in organized religion or spirituality. While you don’t have to belong to a religion or practice spirituality to be mentally healthy, there are some unique mental health benefits of belonging to a religion that the spiritually curious may want to know about. Keep reading to learn more about these benefits.

Safe Structure

The world sometimes feels chaotic, leaving us feeling ungrounded and lost. Organized religion and spirituality practices can provide a safe structure during this chaos. This is because most of them have rituals they perform regularly and for special occasions, such as weekly worship meetings and holidays. Community is also often structured inside believing groups, such as in smaller groups that regularly volunteer together or study a holy book together. People feel safe performing these rituals to affirm their beliefs while spending time within a structured community where they can trust others because of their shared beliefs. Trusting in God or another form of a higher power and expressing that trust through rituals within a community helps us feel safe. And feeling safe will help you develop a sense of inner peace.

Connection Beyond Ourselves

Spirituality and religion can help us connect within ourselves and beyond ourselves. Many spiritual practices like meditation and prayer help us focus, stay calm, practice patience, and reflect on ourselves and our circumstances. When participants finish these mindfulness practices, either alone or in a group, they’re often encouraged to creatively express what they’ve learned, such as through art, and connect with the world around them. Connecting with ourselves and then translating that connection into how we interact with art, the world, and its people is a great way to practice self-acceptance and grow in confidence.

Coping Skills

Many religions and spiritual belief systems advocate for practices that help build good coping skills for mental health. The meditation and prayer we mentioned above are probably the most famous ones. Still, additional skills such as positive thinking, cognitive reappraisal, confidence, and emotional regulation are also found throughout religions and spirituality. These coping skills allow people to fully embrace their religious and spiritual beliefs and help them navigate the world well.

The mental health benefits of belonging to a religion or spiritual belief system are that they provide safe structure through rituals and community, help people connect within and beyond themselves through reflective practices, and provide coping skills that help them navigate the world. While you don’t have to belong to a religion or spiritual practice to experience a safe structure, connect beyond yourself, or develop healthy coping skills, religion and spirituality offer an organized approach to all these mental health benefits that some people enjoy.
