People of all ages and abilities depend on caregivers to help them through their daily lives. As a caregiver, you must maintain your health so you can provide that help and live your own life to the fullest. Unfortunately, many sicknesses try to hurt your health during various seasons.

You can catch pneumonia all year long, including in the spring. Keep reading to learn how to avoid it so you and the person you care for can stay well.

Get Vaccinated

Vaccines are an important part of fighting sicknesses—including pneumonia. If the person you’re caring for can’t get vaccinated for some reason, then your vaccination status can help create a safe bubble around them. Getting vaccinated against the flu and COVID-19 can help prevent pneumonia since the flu and COVID-19 can often lead to pneumonia. People who are at a high risk of pneumonia can also get vaccinated against pneumococcal pneumonia, which is a type of bacterial pneumonia.

Stay Proactive When Sick

Colds often cause coughs that won’t go away or develop into something worse if we don’t care for ourselves while we’re sick, such as pneumonia. As caregivers, we’re often tempted to focus more on the health of the person we’re caring for than on ourselves, even if we’re sick. We write our sickness off as a small cold or simple allergies when we should stay more proactive in taking care of ourselves. Taking the time to rest and stay hydrated when we’re sick with something small can help prevent that small thing from turning into a big thing like pneumonia.

Strengthen Your Immune System

Our immune system is our most important line of defense against sicknesses like pneumonia. We can take extra vitamins when we get sick so that the sickness isn’t as bad, but strengthening our immune system before we’re sick is the best way to prevent that sickness in the first place. Getting enough rest, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and protecting ourselves from common pollutants such as cigarette smoke can all help our immune system.

Catching pneumonia this spring can happen to anyone. You can avoid catching it if you get vaccinated and try to stay proactive with your health if you get sick. You could also take steps to strengthen your immune system in advance. While none of these options are foolproof, they can help keep you healthier so you can continue to provide for the people you care for and live your life to the fullest.
