As a caregiver, you want to provide your elder with the best possible care. However, you can’t be with them at every moment. Loneliness is an epidemic, and this reality is doubly true for elder adults. What’s more, in your caregiver role, you can’t always provide them with as much emotional support as they need. This is how having a pet can help a senior’s well-being.

Helpful Exercise

As a caregiver, you know how important movement and exercise is for seniors. Exercise lowers body weight, reduces the risk of chronic disease, and greatly improves mood. It can be quite the challenge persuading seniors to stay active as many tend to lead more sedentary lifestyles. However, when they have the responsibility of a dog, they will be highly encouraged by tail wags and hand licks to head outside for a walk.

Goodbye Loneliness

Loneliness is an epidemic. Elder adults are at a drastically higher risk of experiencing isolation and aloneness. It is surprising to learn that loneliness can lead to a higher likelihood of significant health conditions such as dementia, stroke, and heart disease. When older adults have a consistent companion, they will feel much less lonely. This is how having a pet can help a senior’s well-being.

Reduce Anxiety

As seniors age, they are likely to become more acquainted with the medical office and may develop appointment anxiety. A companion, such as a dog, can significantly ease their nerves during these times. Some offices may even let your furry friend accompany you, especially when accurately registered as a therapy animal.

If your medical office has strict no-pet policies, worry not. Keep your dog occupied at a doggy daycares, where professionals are happy to watch the furry friend. Consider a dog for your senior, as canines are incredibly loving and loyal to their caretakers.
