Assisted-living-for-couples-5-things-to-consider

Moving into assisted living is not the kind of decision that you should rush into. It’s also not something that you can decide overnight. While looking at senior living facilities for couples, you must take your time.

Surely there are a lot of questions that you must answer. There’s a lot of planning for the future, medical care, community assessment, and adjustments. All this can cause confusion and chaos.

In this post, we look at some things to consider for couples who want to move into one of the assisted living communities.

Research Ahead of Time

Most couples think that they should find a community that is closer to their family and kids. However, that should not be your biggest priority. Your number one priority should be finding a place that is comfortable for you as a couple to live in.

Remember, this is the place where you are going to grow old and be living together. Therefore, take some time to do plenty of research. Find out a facility that feels as close to the home as possible. Do not just judge things from the cover. Pay a visit to get a feel of the place.

Consider Individual/Shared Needs

Communication is key when you’re working on decisions like finding a couple’s assisted living. Talk about what your individual needs are and what kind of facilities would suit them best. You may have to make a few compromises here and there. But, in the end, it’s important to find a place that both individuals can enjoy.

Since this is a life decision, it’s crucial that both partners can meet their needs in a community that is going to be their home.

Amenities & Opportunities

The list of amenities that most living communities offer is long. Amenities are another important thing for you to consider if you want to live enriching, healthy lives conveniently. You might want to think about the following and whether or not they are important to you:

  • Hair salon
  • Walking trails
  • Theater
  • Library
  • Guest accommodations
  • Fitness center
  • Dining room
  • Community center
  • Etc.

Remember, that these are just some of the commonest amenities to expect. The actual list can be pretty intensive.

Think about the importance of cohabitation

You may end up in a community that allows married couples, but requires them to live in different units based on the level of care they need. For many people, this is often a deal-breaker. For others, this is a manageable thing.

Think about it. You will still be able to meet each other any time your heart desires as you will both essentially be living on the same premises. Both individuals can receive the exact level of care that they need. It also relieves the healthy individual from undertaking more responsibilities than necessary which could burn them out soon.

This is something that you, as a couple, will have to think about. Think about whether or not you’re comfortable living in separate units or if it’s a deal-breaker for you.

Plan for Future Health Care Changes

You must both be realistic about what your current level of health needs are and what kind of care they might need in the future. During old age, things can come rather unexpectedly. Therefore, you must prepare for it well in advance. In this way, you can be ready for whatever the future may hold.

Avoid Rushing. Take Your Time

It’s a common mistake for people to rush into things. Do not do that. Take your time because picking a living community for a couple is a huge decision. The more time you put into planning and research, the more sure you can be about your final decision. You will be confident and happy wherever you end up.

Finding an assisted living community should not be scary or intimidating. As long as you can plan ahead, you will have lesser things to be concerned about.
