Traveling through airports can be stressful for anyone, but especially for seniors who may have mobility, medical, or other needs. Fortunately, many airports have special assistance programs in place specifically for older travelers. Being aware of these programs and planning is key to ensuring a smooth airport experience.

Check With Your Airline First

Before heading to the airport, seniors should always inform their airline of any assistance they may require during their travel. Airports and airlines provide airport assistance for elderly that includes services like wheelchair assistance, transport through the airport, help getting to/from gates, and more. Notifying them in advance helps ensure the proper staff and equipment is ready when upon arrival. Most airlines have a dedicated line for passengers with disabilities and special needs.

Airport Curbside Assistance

Many airports have curbside programs that dispatch personnel to help passengers from their cars, through ticketing, security, and to their gate. Some may transport seniors in carts or wheelchairs. Services vary by airport, so check options in advance. Curbside assistance staff can also help passengers return rental cars and find transportation.

Getting Through Security

The TSA provides some accommodations to help seniors get through airport security checkpoints with dignity and ease. Travelers 75+ can leave shoes/jackets on and undergo less strenuous screening procedures. Those in need can request private screenings as an alternative to walking through metal detectors. Travel with medications clearly marked will also simplify the process.

Airport Golf Carts and Wheelchairs

Golf carts and wheelchair services are available free of charge to transport seniors long airport distances when they may have difficulty walking. Both services typically have designated pickup/drop-off points in terminals. Travelers should tip courtesy drivers. Airport wheelchairs are not permitted for use onboard aircraft, so plan accordingly.

Airport Chaplain Services

For spiritual, emotional, and other personal support, some airports have interfaith chaplain services available 24/7. Chaplains will come directly to passengers anywhere in the airport and provide a comforting presence in stressful times. Travelers can request services by calling the airports’ information line or approaching an airport/airline employee.

Navigator/Volunteer Programs

Some airports connect passengers needing assistance with volunteers who guide travelers to destinations like ticket counters, gates, baggage claim, ground transportation, and more. Navigator programs may include multi-lingual volunteers for international travelers. Those interested can inquire if their airport offers such programs before flying.

Special Assistance Lounges

Some larger airports have private lounges specifically for passengers needing additional assistance or a place to rest. These lounges have comfortable seating, often provide snacks/beverages, and have personnel available should any needs arise. Many also have electrical outlets for charging mobility devices. Travelers should check with their airport and gates in advance to see if such facilities are available during longer layovers. The lounges provide a quiet space to wait with knowledgeable staff ready for any requests seniors may have. Knowing about this additional resource can make travel less tiring for older passengers.

While every airport has different offerings, most strive to provide programs, services, and accommodations to meet travelers’ unique needs. Seniors would be wise to fully utilize these resources. By understanding assistance options in advance and requesting help early when needed, older travelers can ensure airport experiences are as smooth and stress-free as possible.
