Whether you are becoming a doctor, or you are an experienced physician, it’s vital that you feel comfortable and supported in your important role. This post explores three tips for new and experienced physicians.

Self-Care is Important

As a physician you may find that you are like most individuals in healthcare, who are generally classified as giving types of individuals. This means that you might be prone to forgetting about prioritizing your well-being. Therefore, it is important that you take time for yourself so that when you are working with patients you are bringing your full best self to the job each day. Otherwise, you may find that like many professionals you do not burn out.

What does self-care look like for physicians?

Self-care practices as a physician may include scheduling time between visiting patients, so that you can reflect and don’t feel overwhelmed between patients. Perhaps there is a day of the week that you take off regularly each month to decompress. Drinking plenty of water, regular exercise, and eating a healthy diet could also be incorporated into your plan for self-care.

Make Sure You Are Insured

Like other professionals, doctors can benefit from having insurance, even if you never intend to use it. As such, having the right insurance in place can be vital for ensuring that you are able to practice and shield yourself from personal liability. One primary insurance that every doctor should have is medical malpractice insurance. Medical malpractice insurance is something you will want to have prior to caring for patients.

Maintain Your Critical Thinking Skills

There are critical skills that you will want to stay abreast of as a doctor. Although, you will have a solid foundation of the skills needed to treat your patients during medical school and residencies continuing medical education is a requirement of maintaining your license. While it can be difficult to take time away from your primary role for training, you will not want to wait until the last minute to take advantage of the training you need. Like most licensed professionals it is easy to put your training needs on the back burner and find that the courses available to you are lacking in range and credits.

The role you play in the healthcare system is vitally important. In fact, the health and well-being of your patients depends on your critical thinking skills. Access to training and self- care are equally important long-term.
